Negotiating Scooter Price: DO's & DON'Ts

Negotiating Scooter Price: DO's & DON'Ts

Know the scooters value. The most expensive scooters are about the cost of $10,000, while the cheapest ones are under a grand. There’s not a bunch of profit built in. For instance, a 2019 Vespa GTS 300 scooter, it has Manufacturing Suggested Retail Price of $7,000. Walk into any dealership in America this year and try and buy that scooter for $4,000 grand. It won’t happen. Especially on high classic and brand of scooter, MSRP is often a few hundred bucks greater than the dealer’s cost. They’re not going to forfeit what profit that make. I’m not saying paying sticker price is the only option, but I am suggesting that it’s harder to negotiate the cost down very much on modestly priced scooter. Knocking a few hundred two off a Vespa, Genuine Buddy or even these cheap Chinese Brand Scooters is possible. o here are some Do's and Don'ts when Negotiating the purchase price of your scooter. DO: Understand you can get a great deal — if you’re not too picky. I have heard quite a few stories of riders who bought their scooter for under Manufacturing Suggested Retail Price. It happens. Not often, because people don't realize its an option, but it does. And here’s how. First best time to attempt this is during the winter season, when its cold, meaning people are looking to ride scooters in freezing weather. Its during this time when the number of sale drop for scooter dealerships. And more than that its the end of the year and newer models are coming out so they want to get rid of last years model. If you are aware of how this situation, you can take advantage of it. DON’T: Plan to purchase on first trip to dealership Never get pressured into buying a scooter on the first trip. Don’t be afraid to walk out. Especially if you are unsure of the situation. If you’re not getting the scooter you want at a price you're comfortable spending and can afford, you’re obviously going to regret it. But you should know that salesmen are accustomed to watching people walk out the door. It doesn’t move them. So don't expect them to coming run behind you, with a offer you would love. Just keep in mind that these are not cars. So salesmen and their tactic differ. DON’T: Negotiate MSRP, instance the OTD(which is Out-The-Door price) Many people are surprised over the added costs beyond the scooters MSRP price. The scooter MSRP may say $1999 but once the dealer adds in taxes, title, registration, shipping, and handling fees, the scooters more like $2600 now. So that is the price you want prepare yourself for and negotiate down. DO: Get creative The dealer needs your money. You need a new scooter. If you can’t get together on the price of the scooter you’re shopping for, why not see if the dealer can chuck in some stuff at a discount like a trunk or helmet, if you needed one.
